Smart Materials

Smart materials are advanced materials that adapt their properties based on environmental changes, such as temperature or light, allowing them to respond dynamically to their surroundings.

Examples:

  • BASF (Construction): BASF is a global leader in smart materials, producing self-healing concrete, which can repair its own cracks when exposed to water or air. This innovation helps extend the lifespan of buildings and infrastructure, reducing maintenance costs and improving sustainability in the construction industry.
  • NanoSonic (Defense/Transportation): NanoSonic specializes in the development of Metal Rubber™, a flexible, electrically conductive material that combines the properties of metals and elastomers. This material is used in aerospace and defense applications, including flexible electronics, sensors, and shock-absorbing coatings.
  • Gauzy: Gauzy is a smart glass and material science company that develops light control glass (LCG). Their glass can switch from transparent to opaque, providing energy-efficient solutions for windows, automotive, and other smart surfaces
